All fifth grade classes use a combination of different methods focused on reading skills and strategies. Students have a reading “contract” which must be completed by the end of the week. Students spend their reading time in small group guided reading, independent reading, literature circles groups, and whole class instruction. We focus on one reading skill and one reading strategy weekly. Students will have many opportunities to practice and apply these skills and strategies in a variety of texts. They will complete an MCAS-based assessment and an open response which focuses on the weekly skill. One part of the weekly reading contract also includes literature circle groups. These groups allow students to discuss and read novels and other trade books. Literature circle groups meet weekly and students are responsible for reading a specified set of pages in their book and completing a response activity.
