Students
in grade five will complete three major projects throughout the school
year, which will then be displayed in the
Fifth Grade Learning Fair
in June. With the exception of the Million Dollar Project, all projects
should be completed independently by the student. Parents should
be there to offer suggestions, help with materials (gathering materials
as well as cutting, building, etc.), and help students stay on track and
organized. The Million Dollar project involves more complicated math
calculations, and therefore, parents may need to be slightly more
involved with
that particular project. However, it is expected that the students
complete the vast majority of the project. It should be their
project! Below is some general information about the
projects.
**Two of the three projects
require a tri-fold display board. If you are unable to purchase these
boards for your child, please write a note to your child's teacher at
least 1 week before the project is due. We will provide a board for
the student to borrow and return after the learning fair.**
-
Animal Adaptation Project (assigned just before February
vacation) - Each student will complete a report and children's book
on a given animal, focusing on that animal's structural and
behavioral adaptations.
-
Million Dollar Project (assigned just before April
vacation) - students
will choose a theme (such as opening a business, or taking a family
vacation) and show how they would execute their idea on a million
dollar budget. Students must itemize and categorize everything they
buy. The goal is to spend exactly one million dollars.
-
Revolutionary War Game (assigned in May) - each
student will work independently or with a partner to create a
Revolutionary War board game.
