The Butler Elementary School
uses the Everyday Math curriculum in Grades K-6. This program is a
spiraling curriculum, which means concepts are introduced and build upon
throughout the year. This means that students are not always expected to
master a specific skill the first time it is introduced. Each math unit
has a few skills that should be mastered, but most of the skills are
building blocks for larger concepts, or skills that will turn up again
later in the year. For this reason, you should not be alarmed if your
child doesn't seem to "get" a particular concept right away. Chance are,
your child has just recently been introduced to the concept, and will
have mastered it, or at least have a more clear understanding by the end
of the unit. At the beginning of each unit, students are given a Family
Letter, which explains the skills introduced in that unit, and also
helpful tips and activities you can do at home.
Fridays are open response/game days. Students complete an MCAS math open
response, review the open response from the previous week, and then play
math reinforcement games in small groups.Typically, students are given a Study Link page and a Math Boxes page
to do as homework each night. The Study Link page correlates with the
skill students have been introduced to that day. The Math Boxes page is
review and reinforcement of previous skills.

Materials – Each student
has one of each of the following books:
SRB - New Version - this student reference book is just that - a
reference that students can use when they need a quick refresher on a
certain concept, they've forgotten the definition of a word, or they
need reinforcement of a specific skill. These books are kept at school.
SRB - Older Version - this reference book is basically the same as
the newer version with a few minor differences. This reference should be
kept at home for students to use for their homework. Please note that
this book will be returned to school at the end of the year.
Template - this blue plastic template is used throughout the year,
especially in math boxes. Students are responsible for keeping track of
their template, as they will be collected at the end of the school year.
Study Link Book - This workbook contains all of the study links for
the year. Pages should not be ripped out of this workbook.
Math Journal - The math journal contains all the essential pages for
each lesson. Journals also include the nightly math boxes. Students
begin the year with Journal 1 and receive Journal 2 after winter
vacation.
In
addition to Everyday Math, students participate in the Rocket Math
program. Rocket Math is a supplementary program that reinforces math
facts. Students in grade 5 begin with multiplication and move through
division. We expect that students should have completed the
multiplication section by the end of the first term, and completed
division by the end of the second term. Rocket Math timed tests are
taking daily. If your child has not yet mastered their multiplication
facts, please practice with them nightly. We can stress how important it
is to have those facts memorized! The websites listed below can also
help students practice their facts:
